I was talking with my brother one day this summer. He works at Disney Studios out in California, and we frequently share our thoughts about the company’s movie offerings. (Caution: all Disney links in this article will play video and sound.)

The subject of the moment, however, was the Ratatouille branded pet treats I’d just turned up at a local PetSmart store. My brother told me that, aside from Kroger Groceries selling Old Yeller Dog Food, this was probably the first line of pet treats ever licensed with a Disney character.

I suspect he’s right. I don’t recall “101 Dalmatian Dog Bones,” “Aristocats’ Exceptional Catnip Delights,” or even “Nemo’s Tropical Fish Food.” Somehow, I guess, the gourmet cuisine theme of the film Ratatouille lent itself to such a tie-in, where other pets in Disney movies simply didn’t.

Those of you who read my other blog, Crafting Jen, know that my husband and I have had rats as pets for over a year now. We’re absolutely head over heels in love with them. I was thrilled to learn that Disney/Pixar was making a movie starring rats, because it would mean cute rat toys to collect. I never dreamed it would mean special treats for the Lola and Sable, the Rattie Sisters!

But there they were one day in PetSmart, staring at me from the peg - Ratatouille Le Bon Croissant Treats, “For All Small Pets.” I had to take them home right away.

The package design is adorable. My apologies for not showing you an unopened bag - the picture I took didn’t come out, and I had already opened the package to give the girls their treats. But top to bottom, bite marks are drawn into the image of the croissant bag printed on the clear plastic base, making it look as though Remy and his family have already been after the goodies.

The croissants themselves are adorable - little rolled triangles of off-white dough, with a kiss of golden brown as if they’ve just come from the oven. I opened the bag, and called the Rattie Sisters to come get a treat.

In a flash, each of them was nose-first into the package, grabbing a croissant and running for home. Each found a safe corner to nibble their croissant in peace. A hush set upon the cage, broken only by the tiny crunch-crunch of teeth on crispy croissants. Soon, the carnage was over, and they were at the door pleading for more.

Lola Enjoys a Croissant

Clearly, then, Ratatouille Le Bon Croissant earned a very high rating from our four-legged correspondents. I’d even say that they would drop anything to have one whenever they’re offered, qualifying Ratatouille Le Bon Croissant for a 5 out of 5 on our Food Rating scale. I only hope they continue to be available over time - I’d hate to disappoint the girls!

Ratatouille Le Bon Croissant treats are described on the package as “For All Small Animals,” so if you don’t have rats, go ahead and get them for your hamsters, guinea pigs, or other small and furry friend. You’ll have to look in your local pet stores, though - I haven’t been able to find them available online.

  • I’m afraid I have none to offer here - The manufacturer, which is Eight In One Pet Products, doesn’t mention these Disney-licensed products at all, nor can I find them in the Ratatouille section of Disney’s own online store. Though they’re available in the brick-and-mortar PetSmart store, they’re not offered at PetSmart Online. Finally, I found them listed at Amazon, but marked as “Not Available Now”. Sorry!
